Here are just some of the amazing photographs taken from After Barbed Wire: Cowboys of Our Time by one of my favorite photographers, Kurt Markus. This book was published in 1985, by Twelvetrees Press, and is a recent acquisition of mine. After first seeing it at The Strand rare book department in NYC this past spring, I was immediately taken back by its charm and its romanticized vision of the west...a place I was soon headed! Now that I reside in Texas, one of the states documented in this book, I can fully appreciate its cowboy heritage, history and legacy. The black and white photos are just terrific in their serenity, composition and the lure to "GO WEST, YOUNG MAN...." A RAZ must have...thats if you can get your hands on one...
