Like most Americans, I am a total sucker for nifty art direction. Whether it be in ads, magazine editorials, packaging, books, you name it and the graphics will have you caught. That whole ...don't judge a book by a cover crap, well its all crap. Its really has a HUGE part of what we buy into. Lets face it, we get tricked all of the time. Legends of this field like my favorite art director, Fabien Baron, gets paid major bucks to play around on layouts, treatment and the all important fonts of the day. Helvetica, Times New Roman, Courier, Old-English, are all household names. We all have some version of photoshop, illustrator, and quark...I got mine from LimeWire! And yes they are all sooo complicated. But never fear, one can always play and wait for "Happy Accidents" to occur! You're cutting edge now! Fabien is GAGGING! Well....
But for most kids out there, with almost no sense of artistic flair or even a GED, playing around on the computer has replaced the games of the streets. In the last decade, the children(s) are all about catchy (and caught) flyers, invites, myspace pages, personal campaigns and other sorts of printed propaganda. And as these kitty-kat layouts illustrate, one's happy accident is another legend art director's inspiration.
